Kingston House has been designed to accommodate 40 affordable apartments with a mix of one- and two-bedroom units. The building is located in the centre of Taunton, and includes a penthouse management suite. The project involved the demolition of a former snooker hall and nightclub opposite the entrance to Taunton Railway Centre and its replacement is now an eye-catching five-storey block of flats of contemporary design.
When designing the scheme, we needed to give significant consideration to the positioning and orientation of the building on the existing site. Specifically, site constraints included a large retaining wall to the rear, shared access yard, close proximity to Railway Street and Kingston Road, and the steep incline of Railway Street. These constraints gave us the opportunity to explore some creative solutions, and the result is an attractive staggered façade, providing most apartments with some outdoor space in the form of terraces or balconies.
